Would you like to be glasses free after cataract surgery?

Options are now available that allow you to reduce or even eliminate you need for glasses after contact lenses. Advancements in technology have brought more intraocular lens options that can allow you to see near, far and in between after cataract surgery glasses free!

You have an important decision to make! When you are diagnosed with cataracts and are starting your path to cataract surgery, your surgeon will educate you on your options. The traditional monofocal lens will correct one range of vision, people generally will choose correction of their distance vision, but they will still need to wear glasses for seeing up close, for instance, reading. Premium lenses can allow you to see at all distances after cataract surgery, however, these lenses are not covered by insurance as they are deemed not medically necessary.

Toric

ToricToric IOLs – Permanent Correction for Astigmatism

It used to be that a person considering lens replacement surgery, whether for cataracts or general vision correction, couldn’t correct any astigmatism that was present in their prescription.

Astigmatism is a result of the cornea being irregularly shaped; curved more like a football than a baseball. This results in a blurring or doubling effect on your vision. Toric IOLs have a specific shape that is designed to correct the irregularities caused by the unbalanced shape of the cornea, while at the same time providing the distance vision correction a regular IOL would provide.

Patients with astigmatism had to either have additional surgery, such as LASIK, or would still be required to wear specialized glasses or contacts to correct astigmatism after the procedure.

Thanks to the technological development of the Toric intraocular lens (IOL), this is no longer the case.

With lens replacement surgery using a Toric IOL, the lens itself replaces the natural lens of the eye, and is permanently fixated. The unique shape of the lens results in the reduction and possible elimination of astigmatism, as well as clear distance vision. It should be noted that a person who elects a Toric IOL for their lens replacement would still need to wear reading glasses.

If you or a family member suffers from astigmatism, then a Toric IOL could be the solution. We’d be happy to discuss in more detail your unique vision situation and all the options available that could have you seeing more clearly and freely, than ever before.

Tecnis

TecnisThe Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL is a premium intraocular lens that is specifically designed to offer both distance and near vision. This lens is typically implanted at the time of cataract removal. It is also sometimes used during an elective refractive lens exchange procedure. The goal in choosing the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL is to achieve less dependence on glasses or contact lenses.

The Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL brings objects at varying distances into focus using a technology called diffraction. A series of rings on the entire inner surface of the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL focuses the light from objects in our vision at varying distances. This allows for a smooth transition of focus between distant, intermediate and near targets.

If you are interested in vision correction surgery but have been told you are not an ideal patient for LASIK, the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL might be a good option for you. Individuals over the age of 50 are typically the best candidates for refractive lens exchange with the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL. If you have both distance and reading issues or you require bifocals, this might be a better complete vision solution than the much-respected laser vision correction procedure.

The clinical studies supporting the FDA approval of the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL indicate that:

  • After surgery nearly 9 out of 10 patients did not require glasses for any activity. 93.8% of bilaterally implanted patients stated that they functioned comfortably without glasses at all distances—near, intermediate, and far—at 1 year. 88% of bilaterally implanted patients reported never wearing glasses.
  • Most patients achieved excellent image quality at all distances, under any lighting condition.
  • Over 94% of study patients would choose TECNIS Multifocal IOL again.

If you would like to know more about the Tecnis® Multi-Focal IOL we encourage you to contact our office to schedule a consultation.
