What happens during an eye examination?

Routine evaluations are often the cornerstone to preventing later disease.

The eye exam evaluates:

• Visual Acuity
• Need for glasses or contact lenses
• Eye muscle coordination
• Response of your pupils to light
• Side (Peripheral) vision
• Risk of glaucoma
• Eyelids
• Inside of the eye using optical instruments

Frequency of Eye Exams:

The exact frequency of eye exams will depend on an individual's age, race, past eye history, family history of eye disease and the types of symptoms or eye findings encountered. The following are only guidelines.

1. Children should be evaluated by a pediatrician or other medical practitioner to detect vision and eye problems at the following intervals:

a. Newborn
b. First few months of life
c. 6 months to 1 year
d. 3 years (preschool)
e. 5 years

2. School-age children should be evaluated every 2 years (approximately) for visual acuity and eye alignment in schools, vision programs, religious organizations, community centers, and volunteer organizations such as local Societies to Prevent Blindness.

3. Adults should have a comprehensive eye exam by an ophthalmologist or optometrist at the following intervals:

a. Age 18 - 20
b. Every 5 years from age 20-40
c. every 2 years from age 40-64
d. Every year starting age 65
e. Those with a family history of glaucoma or other eye diseases will need to be seen more often.

Patients with Diabetes Mellitus should be seen at least every year.

Schein Ernst Eye Associates Office Visit Procedures

The average time for a comprehensive eye examination is two hours. Please allow ample time. Most patients will receive dilating drops to allow the doctor to examine the interior of the eye. During this examination the doctor will test for cataracts, glaucoma and any retinal or corneal disease. The dilating drops may blur your vision for reading or desk work for approximately 4 hours. Far vision is usually not a problem. After we apply dilating drops your eyes may be sensitive to sunlight. Disposable sunglasses will be provided if needed.

Treatment or follow up examinations require 30 to 60 minutes.

On your first visit we will begin a permanent record. For your protection, we must know the condition of your general health before treatment can be started. Therefore, we ask that you bring a list of your present medications and your most recent pair of glasses, even if they are damaged. Our medical secretaries will help you complete a brief medical history and information form. Please bring all of your insurance cards.
